APRIL 4 MEETING:               2O Years of Women in Rotary

Because of the outstanding leadership of Maria Kim and her committee, Ambler Rotary hosted a District 7430 celebration of 20 Years of Women in Rotary.  We had nearly 160 people in attendance with our honored guest Dong Kurn "D.K." Lee, 2008-09 R.I. President from Seoul South Korea.  The story will be mostly shown through the magic of a camera lens.

D. K. Lee is pictured with (l to r) Maria Kim, District Governor, Jerry Long and wife Jill, D.K. and his wife, Young Ja Lee and President Pat McGee

Maria Kim opened today's meeting by leading us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and singing, "God Bless America".  The Rev. Al Douglass came forward and offered the invocation by recognizing that as we gathered to celebrate 20 years of women in Rotary, Rotary has changed for the better.... that all belong and we have benefited with women in Rotary.

After an outstanding meal of Chicken Florentine, Sharon Dager came forward to recognize our many distinguished visitors, including District Governors, Past District Governors.

Past District Governor and the 1st Woman DG for District 7430, 2002-03, Yvette Palmer came forward to offer her insights into the depth of meaning that women have brought to Rotary.

District 7430 Governor, Jerry Long spoke and later honored PDG Yvette Palmer, for RI,  as one of the outstanding Rotarians in the world for her efforts to support and promote the Rotary Foundation.  Only around 200 people annually are so honored.

Our distinguished and honored guest, D.K. Lee, spoke of his mission as RI International President for the Rotary year 2008-2009.  His theme is "Make Dreams Real".

Mr. Lee spoke of his goal to decrease child mortality.  D.K pointed out that every Day, 30,000 children under the age of five die, most of them from preventable causes like measles, malaria and pneumonia.

DMK introduced the "Not Quite Ready for Lunchtime Players" who presented a skit that was written and narrated by Sharon Dager, "The Mouse That Roared".  The cast was made up of some of the best actors in our club and told the story of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California.  As your photographer was a member of the cast, no photos of the actual event are included, but only of the "Dress Rehearsal".

Duarte admitted women into their club long before it was "acceptable" and lost their charter.  After a lengthy court battle, the US Supreme Court ordered that women be admitted.

Maria Kim closed the meeting by thanking D.K. Lee in Korean and turned the microphone over to Present Pat who officially ended the day's festivities.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Walt West reports that nearly 400 Grand Club tickets remain to be distributed.  The Grand Club is one of our major fund raising activities and it is one we always enjoy.  It's sort of like the "Jelly of the Month" club.  The Grand Club keeps giving, week after week, for 10 weeks.  We have fun watching Bob King draw tickets and read the winner's name.  Our final $1,000 prize will be drawn at Change-over on June 25th.  Back off 10 weeks and this means that we need to begin our drawings on April 30th.  That's only 4 weeks from now.  We now will be past the Spring Gala and need to focus on the Grand Club.   Here's how the Grand Club works:

Each ticket sells for $10.  We will have 10 weekly drawings commencing on April 30, 2008 and concluding at the Change-over night dinner, June 25, 2008.  Each weekly drawing will award two $50 prizes and one $100 prize.  There is one additional drawing at Change-over where someone will be awarded $1,000.  All weekly winners - tickets will be place back into the "pot - and be eligible to win again and again.

Here's the kicker - you receive 10 tickets and you are responsible to returning $100.  Either share them with family, friends or buy them yourself.  Please do not hold the tickets and then try to return them at because they simply sat in a drawer.  Our club nets $7,000 of the Grand Club.  That - s money that supports our charitable efforts in our community, our district and internationally.

Remember, programs are the heart of our weekly meetings.  We are always looking for informative and exciting speakers.   If you have contact with a celebrity or sports personality, let Joan Coleman know.  If you would like, Joan will even step forward and make THAT telephone call for you.  Contact Joan at 215-646-8400.
