THE BARBARY COAST DIXIELAND CONCERT REPORT:

Ten days and counting… Mark Waltz and Pat McGee made their next to last plea for our support on this major fundraising event.  The ads for the program have surpassed last year’s effort.  Sounds good so far, but…

Let’s talk ticket sales - again – Ticket sales are lagging, but it is expected that Ambler Rotarians will come on strong during this final push.  Have you sold your four tickets?  If not, why not?  If you have, thank you and how many additional tickets would you like?  Not only do we want tickets to be sold, but we would like a live body to use said ticket (the hidden message here is that we don’t want you to simply turn in $60 and say that you’ve sold your tickets).

Let’s have a full house.  A full house is much more exciting as everyone “gets into” the music and the show is invariably better than with a small crowd.  Remember that we are a team, the Rotary Club of Ambler, and we need a strong team effort.  Thanks are sent to each in advance from the Barbary Coast Dixieland Committee for your effort to support the “Team.”

We need your support and work effort to assure that this is a successful event.

SEPTEMBER 20 MEETING:

The last meeting of September was opened precisely at 12:15 by President John by leading us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Donna Buckley accompanied us as we sang, “God Bless America” and finally Bill McAuliffe offered thanks for our good fortunes and asked us to pray for the men and women in the military.

President John started our business session at 12:44 and among other things, he is so desperate for some humor, he is now using King Tom’s material.  Today’s joke was about the Pope in Florida to see a football game and sees a man drowning, wearing a Chicago Bear’s shirt being saved by a Green Bay Packers fan.  The punch line was that the Packer fans were shark hunters and asked the Pope why he was messing with their bait (the Bears fan).

VISITORS:

  • Leon Stronecker from North Penn
  • Jack Thalheimer, a guest of Arvind Bhakta
  • Barbara Johnson, a guest of everyone
  • Kerry Ressmiller, a guest of our guest Barbara Johnson
  • Pat Carey, a guest of George.

COMMUNITY IN CELEBRATION: (A.K.A. $$ HAPPY DOLLARS $$)

  • Gene McGonagle parted with two hard earned dollars as he is celebrating the 1st anniversary of owning the Ambler Flower Shop and his first visit to the Rotary Club of Ambler.
  • John and Maureen Pugsley are celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary.
  • Murphy continues to spend a dollar to tell a “cheap” joke.  For those that were not present, we will spare you…
  • George Carey is proud of son, George, who was our program today.

THOUGHTS FROM THE FILES OF TOM MURPHY:

  • A car hit an elderly Jewish man. The paramedic says, "Are you comfortable?" The man says, "I make a good living."
  • I just got back from a pleasure trip. I took my mother-in-law to the airport.
  • I've been in love with the same woman for 40 years. If my wife ever finds out, she'll kill me!
  • What are three words a woman never wants to hear when she's making love? "Honey, I'm home!"

  • Please remember to turn off cell phones before entering our meeting room.

PROGRAM:

Today’s speaker was George Carey’s son, George Carey.  George is with Broadview Networks – a computer network company.  We learned the details of how the internet works and the services that are provided by IPs (internet providers).  George gave an explanation of VOIP and FIOS among other interesting facts.   It was equally interesting to look around the room while George was talking as most in the audience seem not to have the slightest idea what was being said.  While George is in the 21st century, must of us are still in the 20th.  Alright, let’s see how many are in the 21st century; what is FIOS?  What is VOIP?

50/50:  The winner of $12 and a white tee was Jay Jablokov.

STAY CYBERSAFE: (Contributed by Michelle Kalkhoff, Money Magazine)

In a recent study, 67% of people couldn’t tell an unsecure website from a safe one.  Worse, 43% said it’s too hard even to try.  But it’s not.

Be sure that the URL begins with “shttp” or “https” and that a padlock appears in the upper or lower right-hand corner of the browser.  Scammers can fake one but not both, says the National Cyber Security Alliance.  Double click on the lock – a box should pop up identifying the company and encryption.

Some 81% of PCs lack at least one of the three core safety tools; antivirus software, a properly configured firewall and spyware protection.  If these terms are confusing, find more info at staysafeonline.org or by calling your security software provider. Amen.
