DECEMBER 27 MEETING:
It must be winter as President John
lost track of time and didn’t kick off the meeting until 12:20 P.M. We
recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, sang the National Anthem and Bill McAuliffe led the invocation by asking
blessings for the New Year, peace throughout the world and for prayers for the
men and women serving in our military.
President John reminded board members that there will be a board meeting on January 16th,
beginning at 5:30 at Urban’s Funeral Home.
Anne
Dunnington, made a short presentation promoting the Rotary
Foundation’s program, EREY – Every Rotarian Every Year (donate
$100 every year to the Foundation), by passing out a brochure that outlines the
program and has a form to complete to start your giving program. The forms are to be completed and returned to
Anne in the pre-addressed envelopes Anne provided. It seems that with Anne’s leadership,
the Rotary Club of Ambler will soon have a 100% participation rate in giving to
the Foundation. Information you will
need to complete your form follows: our
club # is 5416, our district is 7430 and your R.I. number may be found on
the address label on your Rotarian
magazine (an eight digit number).
President John announced that Joan Coleman has accepted
the position of Second Vice President for the upcoming Rotary year. President John thanked our welcoming table
workers: Joan Coleman, Elaine Hubing and Steve Pribis.
Tom Morrison reflected upon his days in
Bastogne France living through the Battle of the Bulge during the Christmas
Season of 1944 and how he and other soldiers sang “Silent Night” in
a field hospital on Christmas eve (he was there because he transported wounded
soldiers to the hospital) followed shortly after by German prisoners of war
also singing the hymn. Flash forward to
the days Stan Nagahashi used to sing “Silent Night,” in Japanese, at
the close of every Christmas program.

- Paul Costa, John
Costa’s nephew (John is not a visitor)
- Mike Dare from the Horsham Rotary
Club and guest of John Snyder
A ROTARY MINUTE:
Ray Miller did his best imitation of a Rotary “Minute.” Ray used the acronym ROTARY to explain what
he sees in Rotary.
R – Means Rotary itself with Service Above Self
O – Objective
T – Today, yesterday and tomorrow
A – Around the world, over 200 countries,
32,000 Clubs and 1.2 million members
R – Reality of times in which we live
Y – You and you and you and you and years
yet to come.

COMMUNITY IN CELEBRATION: (a.k.a. Happy
Dollars)
- Mark Waltz mentioned that we have 3 members
who have over 50 grandchildren and he is happy that he isn’t one of
them and doesn’t have to buy Christmas presents for all those
children.
- George Carey’s wife Pat was notified by
the Social Security system that she has died and the family should return
her latest check. Pat’s been
working to let Social Security know that she is still alive and kicking
George.
- Alain DuPlat reported that Graciela is
doing very well after being diagnosed with brain cancer just over one year
ago.
- John
Costa donated $1 for each week that he has
missed. Did he take out a home
equity loan?
- Bill
Hummel had an ethical dilemma – he purchased
Dick Booth’s 50-50 tickets and wondered what to do if Dick was the
BIG winner. Give the money to Dick
or donate it to the Foundation in Dick’s name?
- Eric
Faddis asked everyone to send thoughts to him for
inclusion in this newsletter’s Afterthought.
- Tom
Morrison found two pair of reading
glasses in our meeting room. If
you’ve lost your glasses, call Tom.
- John Snyder thanked all for the
support he’s received in his first six months of leadership.
PROGRAM:
Jessica
Barto from the Community Ambulance Association
gave us a quick training session on the Heimlich maneuver. This was simply an attempt to familiarize us
with the maneuver and not “certify us.” Classes are available at the Ambulance
Association for those who want to become certified. We may be a bunch of “old business
people”, but several of our members have already saved lives with
successful use of the Heimlich maneuver.
Jessica also gave a brief overview of CPR. If you are interested in becoming certified
in CPR or the Heimlich, call the Community Ambulance Association at
215-643-4111, extension 106. Classes are
scheduled as demand dictates.

AFTERTHOUGHTS:
- I would hope in the year just ahead we would
continue to focus on ways in which we could build a better community.
This would start with an audit of the needs of the people in the community
and then to seek solutions that would resolve the problem, remembering
that there are no insoluble problems, only those that take a little longer
to resolve. With persistence to understand the concerns of the
community and then the patience to bring people together to find the
solution......and this will be a step forward to building a better
community....putting service above self....and knowing that he profits
most who serves the best....have a good year ahead and continue to be the
best of the Ambler community.
Bill
Strasburg
- If we can live with our multi-national neighbors
in peace and harmony as we do in most suburban neighborhoods, why
can’t the rest of the world?
George Carey
- Deep Thoughts For Those Who Might
Take Life Too Seriously:
- A day
without sunshine is like......night.
- On the
other hand, you have different fingers
- He, who
laughs last, thinks slowest.
- Depression
is like anger without enthusiasm.
- The
early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the
trap.
- Support
bacteria..........they're the only culture some people have.
- A clear
conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.
- Change
is inevitable, except from vending machines.
- If you
think nobody cares, try missing a couple of payments.
- How
many of you believe in psycho-kinesis? OK then, raise my hand.
- So
what's the speed of dark?
- When
everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.
- Hard
work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.
- How
much deeper would the ocean be without sponges?
- Eagles
may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines
- What
happens if you get scared half to death twice?
- I
couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.
- Just
remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would all fall off.
- Light
travels faster than sound.
That's why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

- Have you ever thought about what it
means to be an Ambler Rotarian?
Friendships with some of the finest people one will meet anywhere,
service to the Ambler community, support of R.I. exchange programs such
as Group Study Exchange and Student Exchange, support for international
programs and being a member of a vast “army” of volunteers
leading the fight against Polio, to me, are just a few examples of the
benefits of being an Ambler Rotarian.
Happy New Year to one and all.
