GUESTS AND VISITING ROTARIANS:
COMMUNITY IN CELEBRATION (HAPPY DOLLARS):
STUDENT OF THE MONTH:
Our student of the month from Wordsworth Academy was Annitia Rodriguez. Interact advisor; Steve Bass said of Annitia, “This lovely young lady is treasured by everyone at Wordsworth as a great team member and an emerging leader. She has been a stalwart of the Interact Club for her energetic efforts on every project but most especially recycling where she can be counted on to pitch in as much as any other member. She has great ideas that she shares at meetings and always has a kind word for the people who help. Annitia’s efforts also shine in her academic class and in her Culinary Arts Class where she is always the first to ask, what can I do?”

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER:
President Bruce inducted the newest member of Rotary in the whole wide world, Howard “Howie” D. Brown, IV. Howie is the Managing Director of Act II Playhouse in Ambler
Howie’s sponsor shown in the following photo is none other than Phil Albright.

PROGRAM:
Our program today featured local general contractor and carpenter, Bud Henkels. In addition to being a life-long resident of the area, Bud is an active Revolutionary War Reenactor. Bud is a member of the 11th Pennsylvania Regiment (www.11thpa.org) which is a Philadelphia based reenactment unit dedicated to the preservation of history and the accurate interpretation of the military and civilian roles of men, women and children in 18th Century America for the education of the general public. Bud brought along some of his collection of authentic artifacts from that era and dressed the part of a militiaman. He explained what he was wearing and why he wore it. He showed 4 different weapons of the time and we even learned the difference between a muzzle and a rifle. Upon leaving the Inn, your reporter was approached by a fellow member who said that he really didn’t like programs like that, but, Bud really made it interesting and it turned out to be one of the best presentations of the year. By the way, Bud’s son is a blacksmith in Williamsburg, VA and sparked Bud’s interest in the Revolutionary War.

District 7430 Conference Update Did everyone get a chance to check out the website? I know that some of you did because I got a few e-mails and questions about the site and information that is posted. THANK YOU for taking the time to see the site and give feedback. It is so appreciated. You may have seen that Rotary International released the theme for 2012 – 2013 this week. It is Peace through Service. I smiled because DG Bill Jahn is one year ahead of RI and has invited three fabulous speakers … A Rotary Peace Scholar, the Executive Director of Friends Forever, a Rotarian founded organization, and Mary Jane Gallagher, from the Ontario Ministry of Education to be featured speakers at the 2012 District Conference. DG Bill Jahn has heard these individuals speak and knows how powerful their message is. He wants people to attend the conference not only for fellowship and fun (I promise there will be plenty of that!) but to be moved by the impact Rotary has locally and around the world. So here is the message this week ~ We want you to hear about the work of our Featured Sponsors in bringing peace to the world. We want you to be inspired and we want to take the opportunity at the conference to be reminded why we should all be PROUD to be Rotarians. We want you to WANT to come to the conference. Here are the brief biographies about the speakers that can be found on the website and registration forms: Lt. D.F. Pace is a member of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia. He is a one of only five lawyers among Philadelphia’s 6000 police officers, as well as a instructor at the Police Academy. As a Peace Fellow, Lt. Pace has spent three months of study at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand where the focus is on violence prevention, mediation, compromise building, and the philosophy of peace building. Steve Martineau is Executive Director of Friends Forever, an organization that was founded in 1986, by Rotarian Robert Raiche. Friends Forever began as a joint YMCA/Rotary effort to unite one small group of Catholic and Protestant teens from Northern Ireland. Friends Forever uses a grassroots approach to promote understanding among cultures in conflict, focusing on teenagers as ambassadors of peace. The organization now works with young people Mary Jane Gallagher is the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Student Achievement Division of the Ontario Ministry of Education. As a lifelong educator, Mary Jane has worked as a teacher, principal, superintendent and school board director. Her role as a Rotarian is also multi-faced. She has served as Club President, has hosted Exchange Students and GSE teams. In 2010, she and her husband led a team of Rotarians in a National Immunization day in India. Mary Jane’s message to Rotarians is “How Big is Your Neighborhood.” It is going to be great. I hope you get a sense of my enthusiasm and can share just a part of that with your clubs. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. And remember ~ District Conference 2012 is April 20-22nd. Mark you calendar. Visit the District Website at www.rotarydistrict7430.org Register. And consider ways to share what makes you proud to be a Rotarian. Thanks so much! Yours in Rotary, Gretchen Vakiener District Conference Committee Co-Chair 610-759-7614 |
The District Assembly will be held on May 12th.
Our District 7430 Camp Neidig youth leadership scholarship program will be held June 15-18 at Camp Manatawny near Boyertown.
